What a UX audit is, and what it is not

A UX audit is expert review, not user testing. We bring a trained analyst's eye to your designs and evaluate them against established usability heuristics, design principles, and your users' likely mental models. No participants. No scheduling. No recruitment lead time.

User testing shows you what real users actually do. A UX audit shows you what an expert predicts they will struggle with, and why. Both are valuable. An audit is faster, cheaper to arrange, and particularly useful when you need independent feedback quickly, have limited budget for recruitment, or want to pressure-test a design before committing to a full research round. For a fuller walkthrough of what's involved and why teams run them, see our guide, what is a UX audit?

What we review and how

Expert evaluation across all stages, from first sketches through to your live, production site

Heuristic Evaluation

Systematic analysis of your design against Nielsen's 10 usability heuristics. We assess visibility of system status, match to real-world conventions, error prevention, consistency, and more, producing a scored, prioritised findings list.

Nielsen's heuristics Severity scoring Prioritised findings

Wireframe Review

Early-stage review of information architecture, layout logic, and navigation structure before visual design. We identify structural problems, like confusing page hierarchies or missing affordances, when they are cheapest to fix.

IA review Layout logic Navigation structure

Lo-fi Design Review

Review of low-fidelity prototypes and design flows. We evaluate task paths, cognitive load, and user journey logic, checking that the sequence of screens makes sense to someone approaching your product for the first time.

Task flows Cognitive load Journey logic

Hi-fi Design Review

Detailed review of high-fidelity screens for visual hierarchy, affordance clarity, consistency, label accuracy, and interaction patterns. Catches issues before handoff to development, when they are still cheap to resolve.

Live Site Review

Full expert audit of your production website or app, exactly as customers experience it today. No staging environment or design file needed, just a URL.

Expert Walkthrough

A senior UX practitioner walks through your product as a first-time user, narrating friction, confusion, and moments where the design departs from expected conventions. A trusted pair of eyes, unclouded by your team's assumptions.

Content & Copy Review

Assessment of interface copy for clarity, consistency, and tone. We flag confusing labels, unhelpful error messages, instructions that assume too much, and microcopy that creates friction rather than removing it.

How a UX audit works

A structured process that produces actionable findings, not a list of opinions

Share your designs, or a link to your live site

Send us a Figma link, prototype URL, PDF, screenshots, or just the URL of your live site. We work with whatever you have: rough wireframes through to a fully shipped product.

Define scope and questions

What are you most uncertain about? Which flows matter most? Any known issues you want a second opinion on? We focus the audit where it adds the most value.

Expert evaluation

A senior UX practitioner systematically evaluates your designs against established heuristics and your target users' likely mental models. We document every finding.

Severity rating

Every issue is rated by impact: critical (blocks tasks), high (causes significant friction), medium (minor annoyance), low (nice to fix). So you know what to tackle first.

Recommendations, not just critique

For every problem identified, we explain why it is happening and suggest how to fix it. Design-informed solutions, grounded in UX principles and best practice, not a list of complaints.

Annotated report delivery

You receive a clear, annotated report with screenshots, findings, severity ratings, and recommendations. Structured to be useful in design reviews, sprint planning, or stakeholder conversations.

When a UX audit is the right call

Expert review fits some situations better than user testing, and often works well alongside it

Before user testing

Fix obvious issues before you put users in front of your design.

Best when You have a design ready for testing but want to remove basic problems before participants see it.

What you get A cleaner test stimulus, and more useful signal from user sessions, less noise from avoidable errors.

You leave with Revised designs and a prioritised issue list to resolve before fieldwork begins.

When there is no time to recruit

Expert evaluation is faster than organising user sessions.

Best when You need design feedback in days, not weeks. A sprint is closing, a deadline is approaching.

What you get Prioritised findings and recommendations with no recruitment lead time.

You leave with Actionable fixes your team can start on immediately.

Independent second opinion

A fresh perspective when your team is too close to the design.

Best when Your in-house team has reviewed the design multiple times and needs an external eye unclouded by familiarity.

What you get Honest, expert assessment from someone approaching the design cold.

You leave with Independent findings you can bring to design reviews and stakeholder conversations with confidence.

Ongoing design QA

Regular expert review built into your design process.

Best when You are shipping features regularly and want expert review as a recurring quality check, not just a one-off.

What you get Consistent review cadence: catch issues each sprint before they compound across the product.

You leave with Cumulative quality improvements and a growing record of identified and resolved UX issues.

Who uses expert design review

From in-house design teams to agencies building for clients. UX audits work for anyone with a design that needs honest, expert feedback

UX audits in practice

Two examples of expert review doing work that user testing either could not do in the time, or should not have been asked to do yet.

Trade Classics

A UX audit focused on information architecture and conversion for Trade Classics' curated auctions, delivered as expert analysis followed by a findings workshop, and it drove a measurable uplift in conversion.

Your workshop gave us a eureka moment around the excitement and emotion of auctions. You helped us see what we'd been missing.

Wellbeing app pre-alpha audit

An independent UX and accessibility audit found defects that would have undermined an upcoming alpha study. Prioritising the fixes before participant research protected the quality of the evidence and avoided the cost of repeating the study.

Common questions about UX audits

What is a UX audit? +
A UX audit (sometimes called a usability audit or UX review) is an expert review of your product or website against established usability principles. A trained analyst evaluates your live site, app, or design files, identifies usability problems, rates their severity, and delivers a prioritised report with actionable recommendations. No user recruitment is required. For more on what's involved and why teams run them, see our guide, what is a UX audit? We also publish the method itself in how to run a UX audit, if you want to try a pass yourself first.
How is a UX audit different from usability testing? +
Usability testing shows you what real users actually do with your product. A UX audit shows you what an expert predicts they will struggle with, and why. An audit is faster, cheaper to arrange, and particularly useful when you need independent feedback quickly, have a limited recruitment budget, or want to pressure-test a design before committing to a full research round. We cover this in more depth in our guide to UX audit vs usability testing.
How long does a UX audit take? +
A focused Spot Audit of one to three key flows takes three to five working days. A full product audit typically takes one to two weeks. An Audit and Follow-up programme runs over three to five weeks. Timelines depend on the scope and fidelity of what is being reviewed.
How much does a UX audit cost? +
A Spot Audit starts from £2,500. A full UX Audit starts from £5,500. An Audit and Follow-up programme, which includes a second review round and stakeholder readout, starts from £8,500. All audits include severity-rated findings and written recommendations. No participant or incentive costs. If you want a sense of where your product stands before committing to any of that, our free UX scorecard takes about three minutes.
Can I get a sense of my product's UX before paying for anything? +
Yes. Our UX audit scorecard is free and takes about three minutes: fifteen checks drawn from the same heuristics we use on real audits, scored out of 100 with a breakdown by area and the two areas worth looking at first. It is a self-assessment rather than an audit, so it tells you roughly where to look rather than what is wrong, but it is enough to decide whether a paid audit is worth it yet. You can see your result without giving us an email address.
Do you review live sites, or only wireframes and early-stage designs? +
Both. We review at any stage: rough wireframes, lo-fi sketches, hi-fi prototypes, or a fully live, shipped site or app. We work with Figma, Adobe XD, InVision, PDFs, screenshots, clickable prototypes, or just a URL to your production site. Early-stage reviews are often the most cost-effective way to catch problems before they're expensive to fix, but plenty of clients come to us with a live product they want reviewed as-is.
Do I need to provide users or recruit participants for a UX audit? +
No. A UX audit is expert-led and requires no user recruitment. That is one of its main advantages: you get structured, prioritised usability findings without the lead time or cost of participant recruitment. If you want to combine expert review with real user feedback, we can pair an audit with usability testing.

We fully recognise the effort your team invested in recruitment, moderation, and analysis, and we genuinely appreciate the quality of the discussions and reporting.
