The Collective · Participation Studio's participant panel

A participant panel built for better research.

The Collective is our community of research participants: people from all walks of UK life who take part in studies across healthcare, digital services, public sector, and more. Fairly paid, ethically recruited, and genuinely diverse.

UK-based • GDPR compliant • ICO registered

Better participants mean better research

The quality of your findings depends on the quality of your participants. Here's what sets The Collective apart.

Fairly paid for their time

Every participant is paid fairly for their time, in Amazon or Love2Shop vouchers, delivered promptly. No points systems, no redemption thresholds. Participants who feel respected engage properly, give honest answers, and come back.

Genuinely diverse

We actively recruit beyond the easiest-to-reach. The Collective includes people with lived experience of health conditions, caring responsibilities, and services that were often designed without them in mind. Voices that are frequently missing from research.

Ethically managed

Participation Studio is registered with the ICO. All research follows ethical guidelines. Participants can update their preferences or withdraw at any time. Your study is in safe hands.

Who's in the panel

The Collective is made up of everyday people across the UK, not career research participants who sit on a dozen panels. We recruit continuously to maintain a broad and representative community. Where a study needs professional or practitioner expertise instead, we recruit that separately — see professional participant recruitment. Already running your own study and just need pricing for recruitment on its own? See participant recruitment.

We run research for NHS Trusts, pharmaceutical companies, digital product teams, financial services, and public sector organisations. That means we need, and actively seek, participants from a wide range of backgrounds.

We have particular depth in people with experience of:

  • NHS services, as patients, carers, or professionals
  • Long-term health conditions, disability, or mental health challenges
  • Caring responsibilities, formal or informal
  • Digital health products, apps, and online services
  • Financial services, SaaS products, or public sector tools

If you need a specific profile we don’t yet have in depth, we can recruit to it. Tell us what you need.

UK-wide
Members across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Remote and in-person research both supported.
All ages
From 18 to 80+. We avoid skewing toward the digitally active, and we actively include people who find technology difficult.
Seldom-heard
We go beyond convenience samples. Underserved communities, people with complex needs, those whose voices are routinely missing from research.
No panel fatigue
We limit how often participants are contacted. People arrive engaged, not exhausted by a hundred previous studies.

When your brief needs more than a panel

The Collective gives you a strong foundation, but some research briefs call for participants who are genuinely difficult to find through conventional recruitment. That’s where our wider network comes in.

We work with partner organisations across the UK to reach communities that are seldom represented in research: patient advocacy groups and condition-specific charities, community organisations serving underserved populations, and networks supporting people who are digitally excluded or have complex needs.

This matters because the people most affected by a service are often the hardest to recruit through standard channels, and leaving them out produces research that reflects a narrow slice of reality.

  • Patient advocacy organisations and condition-specific charities
  • Seldom-heard communities and underserved populations
  • People experiencing digital exclusion or with low digital confidence
  • Participants with complex or overlapping health and social needs
  • Community and voluntary sector groups across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland

If you’re not sure whether we can reach the participants you need, just ask. We’d rather tell you honestly than overpromise.

Partner network
Relationships with patient advocacy groups, community organisations, and VCSE partners across the UK, to reach beyond our own panel when a brief demands it.
Digitally excluded
We recruit and support participants who are offline or low-confidence with technology, including by phone and through community intermediaries.
Seldom-heard
Standard recruitment misses the same groups every time. We go where participants actually are, not just where it’s convenient to look.
Lived experience
For co-design and PPIE work requiring specific lived experience, our partner network gives us reach that a panel alone cannot match.

What we can recruit for

The Collective supports the full range of qualitative and mixed-methods research.

1:1 Interviews

In-depth conversations exploring experience, attitudes, or behaviour. Remote or in person. We recruit to your exact screener.

Remote or in person45–75 mins

Focus Groups

Facilitated group discussions, usually 6–10 people. We recruit matching profiles and manage the logistics end to end.

In person or remote90–120 mins

Usability Testing

Real users interacting with prototypes, products, or services. We find people who match your actual user base, not just willing volunteers.

Remote or in person60–90 mins

Healthcare & Patient Research

Patients, carers, and healthcare professionals for clinical studies, PPIE, and health technology research. Ethically managed throughout.

Remote or in personVaries by study

Co-design Workshops

Bringing participants with lived experience into the design process. Half or full day. We recruit and prepare participants so you can focus on facilitation.

Surveys & Diary Studies

Recruiting for longitudinal and quantitative work. We handle screening, incentives, and follow-up so attrition stays low.

How participant recruitment works

We handle the recruitment. You focus on the research.

1

Brief us

Tell us who you need, what the study involves, and when. We'll let you know what's achievable from the panel and whether targeted recruitment is needed to fill specific profiles.

2

We recruit and screen

We match your screener against The Collective, then contact and confirm participants. All incentives, logistics, and consent are handled by us.

3

Research happens

Participants arrive prepared and on time. We manage no-shows and replacements. After the session, incentives go out quickly, which is part of why people come back.

Common questions about participant recruitment

How quickly can you recruit research participants?

Most recruitment briefs are scoped within one working day. Standard projects typically recruit within one to two weeks depending on profile complexity. We can often move faster for straightforward profiles drawn directly from The Collective panel. For what actually decides the timeline, see how fast you can recruit research participants.

Can you recruit participants for niche or hard-to-reach populations?

Yes. Beyond our own panel, we work with a network of UK partner organisations including patient advocacy groups, condition-specific charities, and community organisations. This allows us to reach seldom-heard communities, digitally excluded populations, and people with complex or overlapping needs that standard recruitment methods routinely miss.

How are participants incentivised?

An incentive is the payment a participant receives for their time, sent as an Amazon or Love2Shop voucher promptly after their session. There are no points systems or redemption thresholds. The rate scales with what we ask of people, from a short remote session up to a multi-week diary study, and it is already inside the price we quote you rather than billed on afterwards. We find that participants who feel genuinely respected engage more honestly and are more likely to return for future studies.

Is participant recruitment GDPR compliant?

Yes. Participation Studio is registered with the ICO. All recruitment follows ethical guidelines and UK data protection law. Participants provide informed consent and can update their preferences or withdraw at any time.

Do you recruit for healthcare and patient research?

Yes. We recruit patients, carers, and healthcare professionals for clinical studies, PPIE (Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement), NHS research, and health technology evaluation. Ethical management is built into how we work, not an afterthought.

Need participants for your next study?

Tell us about your research and we'll let you know what's possible. Most recruitment briefs get a response within one working day.
