Product Discovery Research: Know What to Build Before You Build It

Before you commit budget to design and development, product discovery research tells you whether the problem is real, whether your idea actually solves it, and what people will use once it exists. We run structured discovery with real recruited people, so your next decision is based on evidence rather than internal opinion.

Problem Validation User Needs Concept Testing Assumption Testing Opportunity Mapping

Why product discovery matters

Most failed products do not fail because they were built badly. They fail because nobody checked, early enough, whether the problem was real or whether the proposed solution was one anyone actually wanted.

Discovery research happens before a design gets locked in. It replaces stakeholder assumptions and internal debate with evidence from the people who would actually use, buy, or commission the product.

We help product, innovation, and leadership teams answer the two questions that matter most before committing budget: is this problem worth solving, and is this the right way to solve it.

Problem first
We test whether the problem is real and painful enough before we test any proposed solution
Real people, real context
Recruited from your actual target audience, not internal stakeholders or a convenience sample
Decision ready
A clear build, iterate, or stop recommendation, backed by evidence rather than a pile of quotes

Product discovery methods we use

We pick the mix that fits your stage, from an early hunch to a concept ready for a first prototype.

Problem & Needs Interviews

Understand pain points, current workarounds, and unmet needs directly from the people affected, before you design anything.

Needs mapping Pain points Current workarounds

Contextual Inquiry

Observe people in their real environment or workflow, so you see the problem as it actually happens, not as it gets described afterwards.

Field research Real workflows Behaviour, not opinion

Assumption & Riskiest Hypothesis Testing

Identify the assumptions your idea depends on and test the riskiest ones first, so problems surface while they are still cheap to fix.

Risk mapping Fast validation Evidence over opinion

Concept & Prototype Testing

Put early concepts, sketches, or low-fidelity prototypes in front of real users before you invest in a proper build.

Early concepts Low-fi prototypes Reaction & comprehension

Opportunity Mapping

Turn interview findings into a prioritised map of opportunities, ranked by how many people share the need and how painful it is.

Prioritisation Opportunity trees Roadmap input

Demand & Market Validation

Lightweight surveys and screening questions to size demand and check willingness to pay or switch, alongside the qualitative work.

How product discovery research works

A structured process that takes you from an unproven idea to a decision you can act on.

1. Discovery call

We discuss the problem you think exists, who you think has it, and what you already know or assume. Free of charge, usually 30-45 minutes.

2. Research design

We map the riskiest assumptions your idea depends on and design interviews or sessions that will actually test them, not just confirm them.

3. Participant recruitment

We recruit real people from your target audience, screened to match the segment your idea is meant to serve.

4. Discovery sessions

Moderated interviews, contextual sessions, or concept reactions, run by researchers trained to probe past the polite first answer.

5. Synthesis & opportunity mapping

We analyse the sessions into a prioritised opportunity map, showing which needs are shared, which are painful, and which your concept addresses.

6. Actionable report & roadmap input

A clear recommendation to build, iterate the concept, or stop, with the evidence behind it and next steps your team can act on.

What product discovery answers

Different stages need different questions answered. Here is how we match the research to where you are.

Problem validation

Is this a real problem worth solving?

Best when You have an idea or hypothesis but no evidence yet that anyone actually has this problem.

What you get Evidence of how big, painful, and frequent the problem really is for the people you think it affects.

You leave with A clear go or no-go on the problem itself, before you spend a penny on a solution.

Solution validation

Does your idea actually solve it?

Best when You have a concept, sketch, or early prototype and want to check it lands before you build it properly.

What you get Real reactions to your concept from the people it is meant to serve, not internal guesswork.

You leave with Direction to refine, pivot, or proceed with confidence.

Market & demand signals

Will people actually choose this?

Best when You need to gauge appetite, willingness to pay, or switching behaviour before committing budget.

What you get Demand signals from a combination of interviews and structured surveys.

You leave with Evidence to support a business case, grant bid, or investment decision.

Prioritisation & roadmap input

What should we build first?

Best when You have several possible opportunities and limited time or budget to pursue them all.

What you get An opportunity map ranked by evidence, not by whoever argued loudest in the meeting.

You leave with A prioritised roadmap input your team can defend to stakeholders.

Common questions about product discovery research

What is product discovery research? +
Product discovery research is the work you do before design and development lock in a direction. It answers two questions: is this problem real and worth solving, and does your idea actually solve it for the people who would use it. We run needs interviews, contextual inquiry, assumption testing, and concept testing with real recruited people so the answer is based on evidence, not internal opinion.
How is product discovery different from usability testing? +
Usability testing checks whether something you have already designed or built works for real users. Discovery research happens earlier, before there is a finished design, and asks whether the problem is real and which solution direction is worth pursuing. Many projects use discovery first to choose a direction, then usability testing later to refine it.
How many participants do I need for discovery research? +
Most discovery projects use 5 to 10 in-depth interviews or contextual sessions, which is enough to identify recurring needs, pain points, and reactions to a concept. Larger or more diverse audiences, or projects that need to validate demand across several segments, typically use 9 to 15 sessions, sometimes paired with a short survey for wider demand signals.
What do I get at the end of a discovery project? +
A prioritised opportunity map based on what real people told us, not a transcript dump. You get a clear recommendation on whether to build, iterate the concept, or stop, along with the evidence behind that recommendation, video clips, and next-step guidance your team can act on straight away.
Can discovery research help with a grant bid or investment case? +
Yes. Evidence that a problem is real and that your proposed solution addresses a genuine need is often exactly what funders, commissioners, and investors want to see. We can format findings to support NIHR and grant applications, board papers, or investor decks alongside the working recommendations for your product team.
How much does product discovery research cost? +
Discovery research starts from £5,500 for five to six interviews, from £9,500 for a fuller programme of eight to ten, and from £16,000 for multi-phase discovery across several audiences. Recruitment, participant payments, moderation, analysis and a written set of recommendations are included. Running it in person adds roughly £1,600 a day. Build a rough estimate.

We fully recognise the effort your team invested in recruitment, moderation, and analysis, and we genuinely appreciate the quality of the discussions and reporting.
