In-Depth User Research That Reveals the 'Why'
Deep qualitative research to understand motivations, behaviours, and context. User interviews, ethnographic studies, contextual inquiry, and longitudinal research that uncovers what drives decisions and shapes experience.
Why in-depth research matters
Surveys tell you what people think. Usability testing shows you what they do. But neither fully explains why. Why do they choose one product over another? Why do they abandon processes halfway through? Why do some features get ignored whilst others become essential?
In-depth qualitative research answers these questions. Through extended interviews, observation in context, and longitudinal studies, we uncover the motivations, constraints, and real world factors that shape behaviour.
In-depth research methods we use
From one-hour interviews to multi-week ethnographic studies, we match method to the depth of understanding you need.
Semi-Structured User Interviews
One-on-one depth interviews to explore experiences, motivations, and decision-making. Flexible conversation guided by research objectives.
Contextual Inquiry
Observe and interview users in their natural environment - at work, at home, or wherever they use your product. See the full context. Read more in our guide to what contextual inquiry is and when it's worth it.
Ethnographic Studies
Immersive research over days or weeks. Observe real behaviour, understand cultural context, and see how products fit into actual lives.
Diary Studies
Longitudinal research where participants record experiences over days or weeks. Track behaviour changes, adoption patterns, and long term usage. Read more in our guide to what a diary study is and how they run in practice.
Jobs-to-be-Done Research
Structured interviews focused on understanding the 'job' users hire your product to do. Uncover functional, social, and emotional dimensions.
Patient & Lived Experience Research
Sensitive, trauma-informed research with people who have direct experience of health conditions, care pathways, or complex life circumstances.
Expert & Stakeholder Interviews
In-depth interviews with domain experts, practitioners, or stakeholders to understand specialised knowledge, professional workflows, or organisational constraints. If you only need the sample and will run the sessions yourself, see professional participant recruitment.
Longitudinal Research
Follow users over weeks or months to understand behaviour changes, learning curves, and long term product relationships.
When to use in-depth research
Choose deep qualitative methods when understanding context and motivation matters more than quantification
Use in-depth research when you need to:
Understand motivations and goals. Why do people make certain choices? What are they really trying to achieve? What constraints shape their decisions?
Explore new or complex territory. You don't know what questions to ask yet. You need to understand the problem space before designing solutions.
See the full context. How does your product fit into people's lives, workflows, or care pathways? What else are they juggling? What environmental factors matter?
Build empathy and personas. Create rich, authentic user personas based on real people's stories, not demographic stereotypes or assumptions.
Generate hypotheses. Surface themes and patterns you can later validate through surveys or experiments.
Combine with other methods for best results
Interviews then surveys. Use interviews to understand the territory. Then use surveys to quantify how widespread those patterns are.
Interviews then usability testing. Understand needs and context through interviews. Then test whether your solution actually meets those needs.
Ethnography then co design. Observe real behaviour first. Then bring users into workshops to co-create solutions based on what you learned.
Diary studies then interviews. Capture behaviour over time through diaries. Then follow up with interviews to understand the 'why' behind patterns you observed.
How we conduct in-depth research
Rigorous qualitative research that generates credible, actionable insight
Research design and planning
Clear research questions. Sampling strategy to ensure diverse perspectives. Discussion guides that allow flexibility whilst covering key topics.
Skilled interviewing
We probe beyond surface answers, follow interesting threads, and create space for people to share honestly. Active listening, not just question asking.
Ethical approaches
Informed consent. Fair payment. Psychological safety. Trauma-informed practice for sensitive topics. Participants can withdraw or skip questions anytime.
Recording and transcription
Audio or video recording (with consent). Professional transcription. Detailed notes capturing non-verbal cues and context.
Rigorous analysis
Thematic analysis following established frameworks. Multiple researchers code data. Themes emerge from the data, not imposed from assumptions.
Rich reporting
Findings with verbatim quotes, participant profiles, and clear themes. Video highlights. Personas or journey maps where appropriate. Clear implications for design.
Remote or in-person
Both work well for interviews. Remote gives you broader reach. In-person builds deeper rapport and allows observation. We help you choose.
Stakeholder involvement
You can observe sessions (behind the glass or remotely). We run synthesis workshops to build shared understanding. Findings presentations that bring participants to life.

Common questions
What counts as in-depth user research?
In-depth user research includes any method designed to uncover the motivations, behaviours, and mental models behind what people do. This includes semi-structured interviews, contextual inquiry, diary studies, ethnographic observation, and jobs-to-be-done research. These methods give you the why behind user behaviour, not just the what.
How is in-depth research different from a survey?
Surveys measure what a large number of people think or do. In-depth research helps you understand why they think or do it. Surveys give breadth; in-depth research gives depth. For complex questions about user needs, barriers, or decision-making, qualitative in-depth methods are usually more appropriate.
How many participants do you typically interview?
Most in-depth research projects involve six to twelve participants. This range is usually sufficient to reach thematic saturation for a clearly defined audience. For studies with multiple distinct user groups or complex recruitment criteria, larger samples are scoped accordingly.
How much does in-depth user research cost?
Projects start from £5,500 for a focused study with six participants. Larger programmes with multiple audience segments, longer fieldwork periods, or complex recruitment profiles are quoted based on scope. All participant incentives, recruitment, facilitation, analysis, and a findings report are included.
How long does an in-depth research project take?
A focused interview study with six to eight participants typically takes three to four weeks from brief to findings. Diary studies and longitudinal research take longer by nature, often four to eight weeks depending on the study duration.
We fully recognise the effort your team invested in recruitment, moderation, and analysis, and we genuinely appreciate the quality of the discussions and reporting.
- Usability problems in an insulin device surfaced before manufacturing locked anything in, with human factors evidence supporting the regulatory submission.
- An NHS patient portal team got a prioritised, evidenced list of adoption barriers, and the highest-leverage fix wasn't the one they expected.
- Patient involvement changed a trial's primary endpoint before the protocol was finalised, cited by the ethics committee as a model for evidencing PPIE.
